Why on earth would she want to go to the opera with Roger? Go with someone who will actually enjoy it. Both of you will be miserable.

I’ve never understood couples who thought they had to do everything together, even if it meant one of them was miserable.

Some spouses insist with living on the illusion that they must do everything together.

It’s also very trite and stereotyped…that the husband HAS to hate opera. (YAWN)

“Marriage is either the greatest blessing or the greatest curse” - a quote from my dad who’s been happily married to my mom for 53 years. He also taught me that it is what you make it. The marriage with your spouse isn’t 50 / 50. You both have to dedicate 100% of your efforts to making it the best it can be. Try to out-give and out-love your partner and see what happens!

It’s not so bad to have to do everything together unless everything in one’s world is nothing at all. That’s probably part of the reason my lady and I get along so well. We have things we like to do together and things we like to do separately, and we do them.

Peter needs to ask Denise what she would like for their anniversary. Going to a park or what a movie or just being together. I and my husband been married for 28 years and doing okay.

treBsdrawkcaB, your last sentence is my philosophy exactly! In fact, I think the world would do best to compete in this way. “Outdo one another in showing honor.” Building each other up…what a concept!

Denise is –as I’ll put it, andhony– seeing-impaired. She may not be able to see the actors, but at least she’ll hear the opera, though.

I, a guy, have never been to an opera there are a few opera pieces I like for example “Habanera.”

Evidently I’m more eclectic in my musical tastes than most. There are few genres of music I like without reservation, and few genres in which I can find nothing redeeming at all. Even rap (God help us all) has its moments.

And so does opera. Lots of them. :)

My 16 yr old son likes classical music. I’m the one pleading that he not play his opera CDs.

Just because they’re stereotypes doesn’t make them invalid. It’s a stereotype that the husband/father/boyfriend hates opera…because a healthy amount of us DO hate opera. And as stereotypes go, this is a pretty weak one to contest. Why bother?

Not all stereotypes are mean or harmful, and no one with any sense thinks an stereotype is true 100% of the time. I didn’t even see this joke as a stereotype of men or husbands, but rather of most modern Americans (Andy is infamous for her interests not like those of her family, so this is in character). I myself don’t like opera, my Italian teacher (from Italy) says you either love it or don’t (her dad doesn’t love it), and it’s probably more enjoyable if you speak Italian or German.
