“Mauve” as the name of a color didn’t exist in the Renaissance.

It was eponymously “discovered” from a compound first synthesized in the 19th century.

Mauveine, also known as anilinepurple and Perkin’s mauve, wasone of the first synthetic dyes.It was discovered serendipitouslyby William Henry Perkin in 1856while he was attempting tosynthesise the phytochemicalquinine for the treatment ofmalaria.[Wikipedia]

The focus group were not artist, but home decorators who wanted the ceiling one color, mauve, not a mural. Which is why you should never use a focus group for decision making.
