That’s not the price, that’s the amount “sold” so far. Burl’s complaining because the pump’s counted almost half a gallon already before he’s gotten any gas in his tank.
Like JDG said… after the pump is shut off, you keep the nozzle open, and lift the hose up so all the gas drains out of the hose. The next guy pays for the fuel it takes to fill the hose. Usually about 20 cents.

I have seen people hold up the hose and drain it after the pump stops and then the next customer has to pay for the empty hose!
