On C & C, to which Dennis has graciously provided a link above, Nighthawks observes a phenomenon that has puzzled me as well. How does the Headless Horseman find his way to, through, and around anything without being able to see? The horse isn’t going to account for his height when deciding if it can run under that tree limb.
Just in case a couple of you I invited yesterday show up…
“C&C” in Dennis and Liverlips’ posts means
the October 27th 2019 “CLEO and COMPANY”
which you can read on Sherpa via Dennis’ link.
I was planning to be here early just in case…. but it’s very late right now.
I can’t blame it on GoComics OR my internet connection…
I’ve been glued to my cell phone and e-mail, which both get alerts… also to Google, and my online newspaper subscription.
A big fire is raging northeast of me… much farther away this time… but with high winds forecast, is ill-contained and possibly moving west.
Having been sued over its faulty equipment causing a huge fire in 2017, the power company (PG&E)(Pacific Gas and Electric) has shut down electricity to most of the county “to prevent fires”.
On top of that, the COUNTY, having failed to issue adequate warning two years ago in the face of the advancing fires that burned the north part of the city,
is implementing mandatory evacuations, over huge swaths that could possibly maybe almost be in the path of this one….
whole towns to the north and west, and everything in between… all the way out to the Pacific… even though the fire is at least 30 miles from the coast.
And with the power out, some people may not get the warnings.
Tonight they’ve added a big section of north Santa Rosa to the “Warning” level… which means not yet, but be ready to evacuate if we tell you to.
It’s an area that burned down in 2017 and is just rebuilding.
Luckily, I’m in the non-scenic South part of town…. so far, I’m far from the blaze, and my power has been left on through THREE shutdowns….
the one going on right now involves almost a MILLION PG&E customers in northern California, but not my street.
The closest evacuation warnings are about 7 miles away… the fire more like 30. The power outage stops about two miles away… but only means their electricity comes from lines that traverse an area of wind or fire danger.
I like to think even the people warned to evacuate won’t really have to, or if they do, it’ll turn out to be unnecessary.
A horrible thing to put people through, though, who have finally received insurance settlements and just started building, or moving back into those areas…
Imagine thinking your new or only partially built home might burn while you’re evacuated.
We never had a wildfire in town before or since Oct 2017… this is all extremely strange… whether a harbinger of climate change or a complete overreaction.
The wind outside IS strong right now, though… off and on.
MEANWHILE….
I still want a pony like that.
I suppose I’m too tall…. yeah, let’s go with “tall” … to ride him, though.
And maybe the Headless Horseman has one of those voices people call “throaty”… wouldn’t that mean his howl comes from below his head, so he still has it?
In fact, my drama teacher used to say “Use your chest voice.”
He’s not called the Neckless Horseman.
But I think the main reason he can see where he’s going is that he’s an apparition.
Unlike comic strip characters, like Cleo Clifford or Ichadog Crane, apparitions are not real.
They don’t have to obey the laws of real OR comics physics.
I live far from the fires, but the air quality is terrible , hoping you stay safe and if they tell you to leave your area you’ll do just that and knowing how smart you are, I know you will.

Is the horse’s name “Old Paint?”
GROG Premium Member about 5 years ago
It might hit close to home if Bob paid attention.

It’s obvious he was riding in his sleep.

Stubby (Jolly Jumper’s ancestor) talks – why shouldn’t the Headless Horsedog’s Horse howl?
Or there’s an air-horn hidden in his pumpkin.

I should be fine, but a lot of people aren’t…
It’s a little hard to concentrate on the comics.

Maybe the reason he didn’t see them is because he was going to an early Halloween party and they didn’t have any candy to give to him.

Thanks, Tigressy… I shall certainly try.
And don’t worry, anybody.

I love how Ichadog’s horse tiptoes onto the scene.
Who’s afraid?

For some reason, this looks very familiar….like I stared at it for a long while. Anyways, it’s funny and great for Halloween.
