Andy: You bought a cell phone?? Roger: I was tired of being the only guy at work without one. Every time I'd sit down at a big meeting, out they'd come- the little startacs.. the little sonys... Fred with his little Q phone... Well, I can't wait to see the look on their faces when I trump them all with this bad boy! Andy: Want me to give you a preview? Roger: Bigger is better, right?

Almost like the old “bag phones” of the 1990s!

With a phone that size, the calls might drop him!

I had one of those bag phones. I’m so glad that they made them so nice and compact now.

Yeah, but those old analog bag phones sounded great! CDMA (e.g Verizon) phones make you sound like Darth Vader. GSM (e.g AT&T, T-mobile) is a bit better, but still not as good as analog.

Is Roger compensating for something?

The first time I went looking for a mobile the sales guy kept trying to talk me into getting one of those bag phones.

That’s not a phone, that’s a military spy satellite.

Comes with the optional rental of a manservant to carry the thing.

I love it! Shows how much technology has advanced since this strip was current. Of course, our hero, Roger, would probably still get a phone that size in 2009.

Now that’s MY kind of phone. If it drops on the sidewalk, the sidewalk breaks and not the phone. Good buy.

What?? They make them smaller than that now??

When I first got to the Comms Unit I was with we had a portable cellular system that could be taken along with us and hooked into local landline systems to make outgoing calls. The cell phones we used then were commonly known as “brick phones” for their size and weight.

I think he went a little bit overboard on this cell phone issue.

Yeah, I had a bag phone from AT&T in prehistoric times, but it was 3 watts of power, as I remember, instead of the 1/2 watt for the smaller models. I could use it from deep in the mountains where I traveled and camped with my little boy, whereas the regular phones were useless. I still have that old analog phone - don’t know why.

Doctor Toon: So was your first cup of coffee. :))

Back in the 1980s, the first big-sized cell phones were nicknamed “Bricks.” What Roger has ain’t a “Brick.” In the link below is a picture of a “Brick.”

I have this week of comics in the book “Think iFruity”
But text messaging, cameras and games wouldn’t have been on phones when this was written, why would he be obsessed with having a phone? When I got my Cell phone (which would have been 7 months ago) I use the camera, and would text with a QWERTY keyboard and play games on it that are good more than call.

i could put wheels on that and ride it to school

Y’know, I bet the radiation emissions from that baby could power an entire cityblock.
