That ‘Heenk’ is oh so accurate for the sound an oboe makes, at least in the hands of someone who’s played for less than 30 years…

One Thanksgiving years ago me and my ex were invited to a big dinner buffet. She was hungry so she subconsciously heaped her plate with all kinds of everything as we picked our way down the line of choices….then, just before we sat down to eat, she suddenly noticed the gigantic mountain of food on her plate and became so embarrassed that she made me switch plates with her—which meant I had to stuff myself with too much of everything SHE picked instead of enjoying the goodies I liked.

It’s not the reason I eventually divorced her, but it didn’t help.

One of Petey’s historical dioramas was of the Third (I think) Thanksgiving, where the novelty had worn off and everyone started getting on each other’s nerves. The stuffing was dry, whoever was supposed to bring the casserole forgot it, and the Indians were bored out of their minds because the Pilgrims only wanted to talk about football. His teacher was not pleased.

This strip deserves to be better known. My hope is to see the day when each new “Cul De Sac” paperback compilation heads right to the top of the NYT Best Sellers list…

That is one piece of music everyone should hear – just so you can have something to compare all other horrible music selections with if for no other reason! And practicing in the upstairs hall closet might work, but wouldn’t the main hall closet with all those coats to deaden the sound work better?

I love how in the second panel, the oboe is going, “Heenk!” but in the fourth panel, it’s going, “Gobble!”
