No, you don’t have to be literally “born in the USA” to run for president. George Romney (father of Mitt) was a native of Mexico, but was able to compete for the Republican nomination in 1968 because his parents were American citizens who happened to be living in a Mormon colony in the Mexican state of Chihuahua when George was born.
I hate to tell ya’ Claire, but too many people would rather have some TV/Radio person tell them what to think than to make the effort to find out the truth for themselves and form their own opinions and vote for the issues that are most relevant to themselves. Hence, the comments above.
Born on American soil is the point. On a US registered ship, in a US Embassy, on Guam, etc. Thirty-five years of age, and having resided in the US at least fourteen years. (So that you may have been educated abroad, like John Q. Adams.) It’s in the Constitution.

It’s a stupid law. A citizen should be what qualifies a person to run for office. Many excellent people are being overlooked I’m sure.
