I had a door bell with a cover over the mechanism that could be turned upside down. This did in fact make it go dong ding instead of ding dong. The ding sound (the striker plate at one end of the cover) was a slightly higher tone than the dong sound made by the plate at the opposite end.

Farrenâs right. What he did wrong was install it upside-down.
