There are a couple of terms for that phenomenon. The French call it âlâesprit de lâescalierâ (the wit of the staircase), while the German translation is âtreppenwitzâ. The idea is that you think of the proper response just as you are going down the stairs after an encounter in someoneâs office or apartment.
