See? Newspapers are still good for something.

Mothers were the original recyclers!

In about 5-10 years, this will probably be the primary use of newspapers!!!

We used to lay them out to peel potatoes on. 1940s I prefer plastic to keep the garbage can clean and un-smelly.

I have a feeling this is a new one. Any thoughts on my guess? I usually suspect a new one, because I notice that Elly is drawn rounder and her nose is bigger. Plus, in this one, the idea is more “modern”.

I don’t see this strip in the first few pages of “Remembering Farley” (which can be read by placing the title into the search box on Google Books), so I’d guess that it is indeed new. The Internet certainly wasn’t a household phenomenon when Farley was first introduced by Johnston, although I can remember that even back then (early 1980’s) there were predictions that newspapers would indeed become obsolete as communications continued to advance.

It’s definitely a new strip and a good indicator that she’s updating the strip rather than simply recycling.

My Mom had us re-use our paper lunch bags until they were dis-integrating. I did that too. Now we have cloth bags to re use.

I am sure Elly is wise to use the old newspapers to put on the floor (in bathroom or garage) for Farley. Smart thinking!
