Uncle Phil’s looking out for Michael’s best interests. Chicks aren’t impressed by guys who cry. At least, without a good and noble reason. Then that’s manly and sensitive.
It’s terrible to tell a boy he can’t cry. Tears are good medicine just like laughter. They’re a gift from God. After a good cry I always feel better, why should males be denied something that heals our spirit? Shut up Uncle Phil! And Elly, tell Michael later on that Uncle Phil was wrong.

Hey! I absolutely agree with you 100%! Yes, we all ages (baby, toddler, boy, girl, adult, senior citzen etc…) can cry and then, feel better.
Give it a rest folks. Phil’s right, up to a point. Big boys don’t cry, without a good reason. Mike can’t break down and cry every time someone he cares for leaves town. He needs to start learning how to act like an adult, even at a young age.
If too many years pass between good cries, your body forgets how to do it right. Your breathing gets out of sinc, and it hurs. I am not looking forward to when the death of my father finally hits me. I hope I’m not driving.

This is one strip that could have used updating. Most adults aren’t that stupid now.

You’re missing the point.. this comic is now set some 25 years or so in the past. She finished the “updated” bit a few months back :)

My brother-in-law STILL says cr*p like that! So yes, there are still some stupid adults out there.

I’ve always been quick to tear up, even watching sappy movies. There’s nothing wrong with displaying emotion.
