Bill, I think you’ve got it .. he’s looking at his watch, altho until you mentioned it, I thought he was shielding Lizzie’s eyes from something like the apparent violence on the previous panel. Thanks for figuring it out.
BigGrouch says: Elly turned the TV on manually? I didn’t know you could do that.
That was old TV without remote to change the channels and power to turn off and on way back in 1960s-1970s. Nowadays, we have fancy TVs with remotes.
Relax people. Obviously we know the kids turned out okay. TV isn’t completely evil. The family is at least spending time together, so it’s not like the TV is actually babysitting while Elle and John go off to do their own thing. Sheesh. I grew up with a TV in the house and still managed to love books.

Why is daddy placing his hand over Elizabeth’s face like that in the fourth panel? Or is he looking at his watch?

Yes, we old-timers used to do lots of things by hand. Before the lazy people discovered remote controls. Like turning pages in a book.

How about turning up the volume on the radio, Silverperal? “The Shadow Knows”

My wife raised both of her kids without a TV. They have grown up earning high academic honors and with the love of reading.

In my sister’s family, communication is yelling at each other OVER the sound of TV. XD

The only communication I ever get from family TV addicts is when I walk in to say something and everybody goes ‘shhhuuush’
