I liked Tom Toles observation on this in a cartoon a while back.
“One of the major obstacles to a peace agreement in the Middle East has been the split between Fatah and Hamas. But the two sides today announced a unity accord. This will also be an obstacle to a peace agreement.”
Neither Israel or Hamas has any interest in a settlement at this time. For a change, we should stay out of it until both sides have someone worth talking to. We have no real influence with either side considering our strategic concerns.
