"Forty nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight..." Patty sits on the curb and watches Lucy bounce her ball on the ground: pat, pat, bumpety bump. Charlie Brown watches them.<BR><BR> "I can't believe it," Charlie Brown declares, watching Lucy dribble the ball: Bumpety bumpety, bump bump. Patty drones on, "Forty nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine."<BR><BR> "Are you still bouncing that crazy ball?" he asks Lucy. She is bent over he ball.<BR><BR> "Ssh! Don't bother her...she's past fifty thousand!" Patty warns Charlie Brown. "But she's been going all week! Make her stop!" Charlie Brown says. Lucy dribbles on, impervious.<BR><BR> "Fifty thousand an' one, fifty thousand an' two..." Patty counts, standing next to an oblivious Lucy. Charlie Brown runs down the street: "It's driving me crazy!" he cries.<BR><BR> Charlie Brown crouches on the floor in front of a dresser and rummages through a drawer: "I'll stop her! I know I'll stop her! I've got to stop her!" He tosses one ball after another over his shoulder. A basket sits on the floor behind him.<BR><BR> "HERE! Bounce these!" Charlie Brown announces, throwing up a basket full of ball into the air. They scatter all over, knocking a sruprised Lucy off her feet.<BR><BR> He walks away, declaring, "A guy has a right to preserve his sanity!" Lucy sits in the street, surrounded by balls. "Poor Lucy," she comments.<BR><BR>

The classic Charlie Brown was always a sympathetic character. The early one could be downright reprehensible.
