Red: Every Summer we try to catch Moby Tadpole. Yet every summer we come up empty. Why do you suppose that is, Rover?
Rover: I dunno- Because you can't dredge the pond on account of you're too young to operate heavy machinery?
Red: Bingo!

Red Red Red… times have changed (but then you are kinda timeless ain’t ya)… my uncles used to keep heavy machinery in their yards when I was growing up… big mistake for a curious child… I borrowed (I use that word loosely) a backhoe to dig up a small pond in back of my elementary school. I thought that if I turned the pond into a lake we could all go for a swim over recess. I got bogged down in the mud because I was an idiot and because lacked the experience to handle the machine (mostly I was an idiot).
After that attack on the pond the frogs never came back. I was (and still am) mighty sad about that.
Who thought ecology back then?
Stick with the net. Way more fun to hunt Moby that way. Let the heavy machinery sit quiet as it should when it comes to wildlife habitats.

Any pond is the right one at that age. They all have monsters of some kind.

@lonewolf: especially if you have the imagination. when he was a toddler, my parents worried about my brother going to explore the creek behind our back fence. my sister cured him of the desire (at least until he was old enough to do it safely) by telling him that the gators would get him if he went there. not a likely occurence in southern ontario, but he didn’t know that - and the imaginary monsters kept him safe (in a round about way).

@yyyguy Ah - that explains the urban legend floating around a few decades ago about gators in the big smoke’s sewers! ( was going to say a few years ago but time seems to have slipped by!)

Some time back, Moby Tadpole became Moby Toad and hopped of to better ponds.
