“Dead air” is something that doesn’t happen much anymore: a radio (or later, TV) station with nothing going on.
I remember once seeing Jack Paar (old late-night TV host) talking about a trip to Britain on which he turned on the BBC and saw an empty desk. He watched for several minutes before a man returned, drying his hands with a towel. Dead air.
