@Josh I guess you missed “KA-TACKLY” from a couple of days ago. Thing is, a lot of us think they’re more cheesy (in a good way) than lame, and that’s what makes it fun.

I get really mixed reviews on the sound fx …I stopped using them for a while and readers missed them, but then other readers didn’t. It’s a love-hate thing.

As a comics expert, I would keep the sound effects in. It’s campy and I think that’s the tone of this comic of what I’ve read of it.

I have followed this since it was at Comics.com. “Rip” is to the spy genre what “Brewster” is to science fiction, “The Legend of Bill” is to heroic fantasy, and Capt. Victorious in “Ink Pen” is to super heroes. The sound effects add to the fun.

The sound effects go along with the snappy/sappy/scrappy dialogue, the over-the-top plots and the characteristically caricatured characters. They help keep Rip Haywire from being Secret Agent X-9. (Not that that I have anything against X-9 … but I prefer Rip.)

@comicexpert: Since we have a comic expert in the house, let me pose a poser: In the June 2nd Rip Haywire strip, in the first exposition panel, I think Dan is using a classic comic device of having a text box surrounded by background in order to tell us readers the situation but to also show us the setting. But I can’t remember which comic strip used to do this often and it’s driving me nuts. If I’m right and this is the hallmark of a specific comic, can you remember where this is from? (I could ask Dan, but he’s busy drawing.)
