In the early days of commercial aviation, well, earlier anyway, people had never heard of these new autopilots which kept a plane on a straight course, speed and altitude. It wouldn’t be allowed now — probably wasn’t allowed then — but a British pilot (no co-pilot) put his plane on autopilot, tied a string to nothing in particular, then went out into the passenger area, handed the string to a terrified passenger and asked him to keep the string taut while he visited the loo.
