I think he’s wearing sneakers. And wouldn’t you just fall over if you pulled on your boot straps? What’s a bootstrap? Does anyone know what a bootstrap is? Sounds like something an old person would wear.

Well, heck. A few kids make it. Most don’t. I watched the Mets’ single-A team in Pittsfield for a few years, and only about one player a year became MLB stars. There were a handful of others in the Benny Agyabani, Hector Carrasco and Alfredo Castillo mold. The star pitcher each of the years I saw the team? Jason Isringhausen was the only Pittsfield ace I saw who ever made it out of AA. It’s a craps shoot.

I suspect, stealth6948, that Gil actually told Marty that it us up to him (Marty) to make that decision–Marty did, deciding to skip college and go to minors, and his career was ended by injury.

Actually, Thorp did say exactly that. He said the decision was up to Marty, of course, but in his shoes, he’d go straight to the pros.
