IMHO, we never left the plot. Gertie is preparing to knock Earl’s socks off. And remember, she was ready to go back to him before she knew he hit the road.

Gertie only wants Earl because he has some money now, which is callous and heartless. I hope Earl gives her her just desserts and tells her to hit the road.

stringmusicianer is right. She called the Diner and asked to speak to him. That waitress told her he’d left town. She did want to be with him but she wasn’t ready for marriage. They hadn’t known each other long enough, remember? But she is not only going after him for his money now. Give her a break.

If Gertie is wearing Ovair Ze Topp and Earl is wearing Axe cologne, this strip could quickly lose its family-friendly rating (at least, if we believe what the commercials would like us to believe…).
