Chester Gould lived in Woodstock, IL. Once a week he’d take the train to Chicago to deliver his strips to the Chicago Tribune. My husband used to see him on the train.

The gadget looks like some sort of barcode reader. Maybe he’s going to muscle in on all the Grocery store cashiers?

He bought it at Diet Smith’s Hi-Tech Discounters….. Diet tried for 3 weeks to get Tracy on the phone to come over to show it to him. But since Tracy was more interested in the never-ending wrap-up of the Baskerville case, Diet sold it to Braces.

Maybe we’ll actually get to see this new gadget by Diet “Slim” Smith in the next month or so. Is it my imagination or are these stories dragging on for months now??? And what about background checks? Apparently where Tracy works, they even let the loonies walk in and go right on the job with the detectives. Nice.

I actuallylike the design of Braces. I just hope that DL stays consistant with the character design through the whole story.

Gweedo: “those machines” are called “Telzon”s…at least that’s what they are called where I work (which is in the retail industry)and yes, they are used for inventory, to check prices, to actually print price stickers, etc etc etc…However, to me, the thing Braces is holding, while it looks similar to a Telzon, I think is supposed to be a phone. (maybe he’s going to call Big B or Al!!)

With the minimalist trend of the strip, and this one is no exception, I would like to see reprints of the classic Dick Tracy strips by Chester Gould. I think that a whole new generation would take to this approach, and become true Dick Tracy fans.

jmosby, maybe you are right. I think that’s what Classic Peanuts is. But if Locher did that, it would take the amusement factor out of the strip! Also, hi-tech gizmos like a wireless 2-way wrist radio might not go so well today.

If that is a phone that Braces is holding. the cord is in the wrong place.

I think that is awesome, margueritem, that your husband had actually seen Chester Gould almost on a weekly basis! I wish I could have had that experience. He was one of my early cartoonist heroes.

morrow, maybe you are right, the two-way wrist radio would be outdated, but maybe that could be overlooked; the content of the strip, I think, would more than make up for that one thing. Don’t you think?

LOL! No, Gweedo, I never took the train to see Chester Gould. There was a small Dicy Tracy museum in Woodstock. I’m not sure if it’s still there or not. It would be a lot of fun to see the old strips again.

The Chester Gould Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, IL closed on June 1, 2008. The web page (www.dicktracymuseum.com) is supposed to be new in 2009, but has nothing more than that announcement on Sep. 23, 2008.
