Little Orphant Annieâs come to our house to stay,
Anâ wash the cups anâ saucers up, anâ brush the crumbs away,
Anâ shoo the chickens off the porch, anâ dust the hearth, anâ
sweep,
Anâ make the fire, anâ bake the bread, anâ earn her board-an-
keep;
Anâ all us other childern, when the supper-things is done,
We set around the kitchen fire anâ has the mostest fun,
A-listeninâ to the witch-tales âat Annie tells about,
Anâ the Gobble-uns âat gits you
Ef you
Donât
Watch
Out!
Wunst they wuz a little boy wouldnât say his prayers, -
Anâ when he went to bed at night, away up-stairs,
His Mammy heerd him holler, anâ his Daddy heerd him bawl,
Anâ when they turnât the kivvers down, he wuznât there at
all!
Anâ they seeked him in the rafter-room, anâ cubby-hole, anâ
press,
An seeked him up the chimbly-flue, anâ everâ-wheres, I guess;
But all they ever found wuz thist his pants anâ roundabout: -
Anâ the Gobble-uns âll git you
Ef you
Donât
Watch
Out!
Anâ one time a little girl âud allus laugh anâ grin,
Anâ make fun of everâ one, anâ all her blood-anâ-kin;
Anâ wunst, when they was âcompany,â anâ ole folks wuz there,
She mocked âem anâ shocked âem, anâ said she didnât care!
Anâ thist as she kicked her heels, anâ turnât to run anâ
hide,
They wuz two great big Black Things a-standinâ by her side,
Anâ they snatched her through the ceilinâ âfor she knowed
what sheâs about!
Anâ the Gobble-uns âll git you
Ef you
Donât
Watch
Out!
Anâ little Orphant Annie says, when the blaze is blue,
Anâ the lamp-wick sputters, anâ the wind goes woo-oo!
Anâ you hear the crickets quit, anâ the moon is gray,
Anâ the lightninâbugs in dew is all squenched away, -
You better mind yer parunts, anâ yer teachurs fond anâ dear,
Anâ cherish them âat loves you, anâ dry the orphantâs tear,
Anâ heâp the pore anâ needy ones âat clusters all about,
Er the Gobble-uns âll git you
Ef you
Donât
Watch
Out!
Thanks for posting this, Marge. Itâs an honest-to-God poem that appeared in the early 30s I believe, and Iâm glad to see it wasnât lost, but preserved to prosperity.
Oh, and responding to Shuterâs looks, Marg, it good to see that his acne condition has cleared up from his earlier appearances. I really like this guy.
Margueritem!
I took the time to look Riley up, a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing. Iâve come to enjoy old prose and poetry these days. I think Riley will be interesting to read. Thanks again.

Shuterâs got a little Humphrey Bogart and Harrison Ford in his face. The hair is all Bogie.

From what Iâve read, this comic is an idea that sprang from the poem.

Morning, Anniephans!
Shuterâs face is different than in earlier stories. He used to have warts all over his face.
