I am so sorry! I had only been reading the strip and I thought the dog ran off, but looking back at the comments, it turns out that the real collie in their family passed away. I feel just awful for them.

I wish to extend my condolences and have to say that the rewards of pet friendships out way the eventual losses, I do miss my pets when they go and you don’t really replace them but an empty house is much worse and a shelter can really be a good place to find a new friend.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

    Author unknown…

    Rest in Peace Lady.

So sorry about Lady. This was handled brilliantly, particularly her silent goodbye to the others and walking off into the sunset. I’ve been sniffling every day. Their loss is so hard to take because their love is unconditional and it’s the only pure love we receive in our lives.

Pets give us unconditional love and when they pass it truly becomes clear what a special role they played in how we embraced each day.

Frank posted early this week, or the end of last week that this series is in memory of their dog that passed away the beginning of May.

One of the hardest things in life was losing my dog after 14 years. Still hurts 17 years later.

I believe God gave us dogs (and other pets, too) to not only teach us what unrequited love is, but also so that young children (and adults) can learn to experience the effect of the death of a loved one and to appreciate their life.

I had a second thought that maybe “unrequited” was the wrong word, but no, a dogs love is not dependent on us loving them back. They love us no matter what, much like God, which happens to be dog spelled backwards.
