Not necessarily. Just listen to Oscar and maybe you’ll be ready for pantomime next Christmas.

of course, the starring “woman” in a panto is a guy in drag. it would fit Oscar to a tee, but Sarah? not really.

yyyguy……..Cinderella would be played a woman, Dandini would be a woman in drag. The ugly sisters would be guys in drag. All other characters would be played by the correct genders. This is inherited from Elizabethan theatre, where ALL parts would have been played by men.

This is the lamest attempt at humor I have ever seen. If this strip is always this bad, I don’t know how anyone finds it entertaining. If you want to editorialize then the strip should be classified as an editorial cartoon.

I wish it was funny, but it lacks some essential ingredient.

@S C,Think of this as a “PBS”-pun strip, with Pab relying on us rather than Rat to do the groaning. And, if we wanted to travel to the Pine Barrens, the bat-administering.

Actually, the proper term in panto is a “dame.” There are four types of roles in panto: men, women, dames, and principal boys. Principal boys are women who play young male roles and dames are men who play older/uglier women for comic effect.

I may be directing “The Importance of Being Earnest” next fall, and if I do I’m considering casting Lady Bracknell as a Dame.

By the way, welcome to all the new readers. If you enjoy the strip, go pick up a copy of my novel “Go To Hell” at http://gotohellnovel.com and if you don’t like it, you can just take the book title’s advice.

Anyone who doesn’t like a strip should go elsewhere, rather than make disparaging remarks. There is plenty of choice. I’ve always liked this among the 2 dozen I read here.

I have to say, as an independent, the Sarah bashing gets kinda old after awhile. How about beating up on a liberal once in awhile, like Mr. Weiner, for example.

IMHO – this is why Palin is funnier than Wiener: Palin’s statements are made without forethought and in seeming ignorance of basic historic facts and are defended by blaming others; Wiener’s deeds are done with full knowledge of what he is doing and with complete disregard for the consequences and are defended by a “so what” attitude. Both are irresponsible, yet one is honestly silly, the other is simply arrogant. Jokes about Wiener have an “ick” factor, whereas jokes about Palin are light and trite.

Eugene: I tackle my share of liberals when called for. Sarah handed everyone comedy gold with her Paul Revere gaffe, which honestly was a lot funnier than a lot of liberal gaffes lately.

in my recent “recasting Osama” storyline I tweaked Bill Clinton and Katie Couric in the same strip that I got a punchline out of Sarah with. I’ve picked on Obama and have been absolutely MERCILESS against Hillary in the past. Go back to 2006 and the week of “An Inconvenient Queen” for one example. (Don’t have the dates handy; it was reprinted in “Meet the Royals.”)

Hell, it was subtle in the background during one of my pokes at Fox News, but I even made fun of Teddy Kennedy’s death (by having the photo of Obama smiling next to him with the headline “Obama shut off Kennedy’s life support.”)

It all comes down to one simple thing that people like Bruce Tinsley will never understand: it’s NOT the politician’s gaffe or actions that are funny, it’s the gags you construct around them. A whole page of standalone Palin quotes? Not funny. Using her gaffes to inspire parodies of her failed reality show? Potentially funny. Using her as Mrs. Malaprop? Potentially funny. Palin’s actual quote regarding being able to see Russia from Alaskan islands? Not funny. Tina Fey’s “I can see RUSSIA from my HOUSE!”? Funny.

Anthony Weiner’s penis? Not funny. I have gags I could build out of the scandal that I think would be screaming hilarious, but I would not try to use them in a daily comic strip. Maybe if I can find the right euphemisms….

That said, you need legitimate targets. The right’s attempts at humor aimed at Nancy Pelosi, for example, nearly all fell flat because they were nearly all about her appearance or were misogynistic in nature. There were no good hooks on which to hang humor about her. As a counterpoint, we’re not making fun of Sarah Palin because she’s a woman; we’re making fun because she makes so many stupid statements and WON’T SHUT UP.
