Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for May 26, 1986
Transcript:
Calvin: Mom! Mom! A big dog knocked me down and stole Hobbes! I tried to catch him, but I couldn't, and now I've lost my best friend! Mom: Well Calvin, if you wouldn't drag that tiger everywhere, things like this wouldn't happen. Calvin: There's no problem so awful that you can't add some guilt to it and make it even worse!

“There’s no problem so awful that you Cant add some guilt to it and make it even worse” That pretty much sums up what I learnt in life. Calvin is a genius!

This is about the first time where he seemed to be 100% a 6 year old, at least for the first 2 panels.

That is very, very wise. And it SHOULD be instructive to people – don’t rub people when they are down and they already know they made the mistake. That doesn’t help and it is not what they need.

So very true. I had this strip on the wall beside my bed for over 10 years. Love, love, love it.

These days we would call what Mom said “blaming the victim” A lot was good about my childhood 70 years ago, but a lot is better now. To be fair that is what HER parent taught her. The better thing to note is that Calvin does risk and enjoys his playmate everywhere and every time, so risk is present. But better risk than going friendless!

That is bad parenting.
