I own three C&H books and I have to say, I really hate how Calvin’s dad mostly just seems to openly dislike him. >:-( (Even his mom acts that way a few times!) He isn’t being too sarcastic or mean to Calvin in this strip, but still. I just had to get this out.

My daughter (9 at the time) played the "it’s not fair " card with me once. I pointed out how it also wasn’t fair that she didn’t have to pay a cent for food, clothing, shelter, education and transportation. She never did it again. :D

I used to say this everynight. I went to bed at 6:000. I used to hang out the window in the summer time and talk to my friends who all got to stay up later.

@comicdetectiveDA: I think we are seeing modm and dad from Calvin’s perspective.

Calvin’s wide open mouth is as big as the rest of his body. Try saying “IT’S NOT FAIR” with your mouth open that wide! The world would be fair if it weren’t so foul!

Calvin, life is fair. When you bound out of bed at 6 AM, look at Mom and Dad and smile. Oh, 6 AM is a good time to make noise.

Life’s not fair. I go to bed at 9 pm every night. I miss staying up late and goofing off. I’m being robbed of my time. Or I’m robbing myself. Or something….

Dad should say that Calvin is a young child and the parents are adults. Children need more sleep than adults. Oh, that won’t work; it’s too logical. The world isn’t fair is a copout, though!

“I used to think it was a terrible thing that life was so unfair. Then I thought, ‘what if life were fair, and all of the terrible things that happen to us came because we really deserved them?’ Now I take great comfort in the general unfairness and hostility of the universe.”— Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

As madampresiden12 said, we’re seeing the parents (and Hobbes) from Calvin’s perspective. I’m sure a child like Calvin would see his parents as mean, nasty, short tempered, selfish, etc., just because they don’t always give him everything he demands, spend ALL their time and money on him, let him do whatever he wants… It’s like in Pooch Cafe, where all cats are identical (and purple), because that’s how Poncho sees them.

When its your turn to earn a living, you will see that its some times fair for little boys when they have Mummys and Daddys. Keep that look in panel 4 you can use that later in life walking to work on a rainy morning,Mom needs the car to bring Jr to the doctor.I loved it.

Life is not fair—except that sometimes it’s unfair in our favor. Do we complain then—or do we simply accept it as our due?

Whenever I think life is “unfair” about something or other, I remember that I have a nice home to live in, a loving family around me, my good health, good friends and plenty of food to eat . . . while there are many, many people in the world who don’t have any of those things. Those people are the ones that life is truly unfair to. So how can I then turn around and complain about anything?!? I can’t! That’s when I count my many blessings instead.

One last thought (from me)—a few years back, our Bishop said in his office he keeps a framed saying, “I Don’t Deserve This!”Not saying that he doesn’t deserve the unfairness—rather he doesn’t deserve all the good things God gives. It reminds him to give thanks for all he has, and to look at how to help those who need his gifts.
