Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for July 12, 1987
Transcript:
Voice from under the bed: Psst...hey, kid, c'mere under the bed. I've got a brand new toy for you. Hobbes: Uh oh, I think I saw a tentacle under the bed! Calvin: Monsters! Hobbes: Turn on the lights! That makes monsters shrivel up. Calvin: Good idea. Voice: Aaggghh! Aieeeee aahhhhhh!! gaackk! Hobbes: Ha ha, we got 'em! Calvin: Just the ones under the bed. We'd better open up the drawers and closet too, and get some light in those places! By golly, no monsters are going to get us tonight! Wither and die, bloodsucking freaks of nature! Dad: Why is your light on? What in the world are you doing? Calvin: Mosters, Dad. They could be anywhere. Dad: You're trashing your room at 1:00 in the morning, looking for mosters?! If you don't get in bed this instant, you'll have a lot more to worry about than stupid monsters!! Calvin: What we need is some way to shrivel him up.

If I had been looking for monsters at the age of six my dad would understand.
Calvin’s dad’s reaction is a little harsh to me, but then again, I might not be as familiar with the strip.

Dad probably scared the monsters away.

You could have Hobbes irritate him with the horn, and then blast away with the dart gun when he shows up. . . .
