Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for July 23, 1987
Transcript:
Calvin: Hey Mom, what's this I hear about the greenhouse effect? They say the pollutants we dump in the air are trapping in the sun's heat and it's going to melt the polar ice caps! Sure, you'll be gone when when it happens, but I won't! Nice planet you're leaving me! Mom: This from the kid who wants to be charffered any place more than a block away. Calvin; Hey. Noboldy told me about the ice caps, all right?

Scary how appropriate this is to today’s life.

Maybe we should continue to use the wait and see approach, in case the vast majority of scientists are wrong. When our coastal cities are all under water, the oceans are too acidified to support coral growth, and weather patterns have changed throughout the world, THEN we can do something to reduce our carbon emissions.

I agree that we have an impact on the planet, don’t get me wrong. But honestly, what happened to all the hype about how we’re overdue for an ice age? The evidence we’re given is limited, only to prove a point. Also, anyone else find it strange that Antarctica – the ice land of today – was originally a tropical area with now-extinct ferns and life similar to tropical paradises we have now?

Feet are best. Except for the CO2 in our breath. How about bicycles? Except for the CO2 to produce them…

We could genetically engineer algae to be more efficient at converting C02 to Oxygen and carbon… and if it were possible to breed a transparent algae that can survive between 20 and 70 degrees celsius, we could seed city rooftops, deserts, and mountains (up to a certain height)…

The “Club of Rome” published their “Limits of Growth” in the year before. It’s 50 years we know that the atmosphere is not a free dumpster. Yet…

It was a lie in 1987, it’s a lie in 2024. We were supposed to be underwater by now along all the coasts.
