Transcript:
Calvin: Kiss Hobbes good night too, Mom. Hobbes: If you don't get a good night kiss, you get kafka dreams. Mom: Sleep tight. " Don't let the bedbugs bite." Calvin: What's that supposed to mean? Do we have vermin in this house? Hobbes: The mattress is moving! Whoa! It must be a bedbug! Calvin: Gaah! Legs!! It must be huge! How disgusting! Vgghh! Hobbes: I need more weight! Put your foot locker up here! Calvin: I'll run for some bug spray! Don't let him out! Dad: What's going on up there?! Mom: It sounds like he's moving furniture! Calvin: I got some Raid! Lift up the mattress! Hobbes: Let him have it! Calvin: Gosh, all that spray didn't kill him! What are we gonna do?! Hobbes: I hear your Dad coming! Maybe he can kill it! Calvin: About time Dad! He crawled back into the bed! Get a fly swatter! Dad: I'll (cough) tell you who's going to get swatted! (choke) What have yo done to this room?!!

Franz Kafka, wrote The Metamorphosis, in which a man wakes up to find himself turned into a huge bug.

Not too many six-year-olds have read Kafka. But Hobbes seems quite erudite. That huge vermin is very effective in metamorphosing Calvin’s room into a disgusting, smelly sty.

Sigh. I remember when the bedbug thing was just a funny way to say goodnight, not a real possibility here in America. Yuck!

“Sometimes I wish I could crawl along the walls like a bug. Go team Kafka. I at least want six arms like the god Shiva.”

I love all of the deep, highly sophisticated humor in these strips. “Kafka dreams”! If Calvin has read “The Metamorphosis”, that would definitely explain his fascination with physiological transformations!
