Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for July 30, 1989
Transcript:
Calvin: Why does the sky turn red as the sun sets? Dad: That's all the oxygen in the atmosphere catching fire. Calvin: Where does the sun go when it sets? Dad: The sun sets in the west. In Arizona actually, near Flagstaff. Calvin: Oh. Dad: That's why the rocks there are so red. Calvin: Don't the people get burned up? Dad: No, the sun goes out as it sets. That's why it's dark at night. Calvin: Doesn't the sun crush the whole state when it lands? Dad: Ha ha, of course not. Hold a quarter up. See, the sun's just about the same size. Calvin: I thought I read that the sun was really big. Dad: You can't believe everything you read, I'm afraid. Calvin: So how does the sun rise in the east if it lands in Arizona each night! Dad: Well, time for bed. Calvin: I hope someday I'm as smart as Dad is. Mom: Why, what did he tell you now?

Nice ‘splanation, dad, but the rocks around Flagstaff don’t tend to be all that red – you’re thinking of Sedona, one of Flagstaff’s nearest neighbors. Though he could be right about the sun splatting down in Arizona each night – that would explain why the southern part of the state (Phoenix particularly) is such a wasteland.

Nah dawg. It lands in the Grand Canyon. There’s a secret tunnel that leads to the Atlantic ocean, where it rises just east of Boston harbor.

You read right, Calvin. If the Sun were the size of a quarter, the Earth would be no larger than a grain of sand.
