Fortune Telling” covers a wide area of activity – and is not normally used by practitioners of higher ability.
The experience you describe was a demonstration of Mediumship – of which I have experience. I have passed a test by the Institute of Spiritualist Mediums for Spirit Communication, but decided that I was too questioning to reach high levels – so I transferred to Astrology and Tarot. The aim is to be a “clear channel” -which is why mediumship is associated with trance-like (unconscious) states.
This type of sensitivity is Artistic rather than Scientific and therefore cannot be approached with the Logical Mind, because it acts at the Feeling, rather than Thinking, level. If you try describing “Happiness” in words you will see the problems that mediums face interpreting more subtle “vibrations”.
A big problem nowadays is that the Scientific Thinking function which relates to things like Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, are more valued in today’s “Age of Aquarius” Computer Age, so people who might develop it are forced into areas where they are probably less suited.
To understand this better you can study Edgar Cayce, whose work was just about as scientific you can get in terms of real documentary evidence. Please see my notes below.
How this actually works is not entirely clear because people with the ability use a part of the psyche that enables them to “switch off” their own personality to make a clear line of communication. You will see that Edgar Cayce was entirely in trance, that is, unconscious. Your experience was of someone who could communicate consciously – but the likelihood is that he would need to lead a life in seclusion to protect his sensitivity. Sensitive people are liable to “pick up” negativity – such as bad health conditions – from others.
This is not exactly the same as Astrology and Tarot, which use more practical methods.
