This week at my local barber shop, “two bits” amounted to twelve bucks — without the shave.

How long ago could a man get a shave and a haircut for two bits in the USA? Maybe in the 1800s?

If a quarter is 2 bits, what does a 1 bit coin look like? If a shave and a haircut was 2 bits, could I have gotten a haircut alone for 1 bit? How would I have paid for it – with 12 and 1/2 pennies? (AAARGH I’M SO CONFUSED….)

@rw1h a bit was a 1/8th pie shaped cut of a spanish “pieces of eight” dollar coin. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_bits)

It was six bits, 75¢. This is one of the standard endings for pop music, much like the Good Evening Friends is for jazz. A cliché, both will be used from time to time for comic/nostalgia effects, but never seriously (well GEF occasionally, maybe). In fact, the price part will often be played on a cowbell or wood block to underscore the lack of serious intent.

I’d like to know who was the nitwit to come up with the Spanish lyrics with an obscene translation of the same melody.
