Rocket Shootin' Day Handy Rule #21 No no no no no no no no no no no If you lost your rocket last year, don't let your scout get too attached to his rocket this year.
After many years of being a Mom, I have found that it is far better to supervise your boys in their endeavors to build things that fly, catch fire and/or explode, than to think they are too young only to find out they will make something fly, catch fire and/or explode on their own. The same XY chromosomal instinct that drives them to know how to make car noises by age 1 and to fashion a gun out of a stick, is the same instinct to build it bigger, better and more dangerous. For some reason, when Mom teaches them how to build a rocket, launch it, and then laugh even harder than they do at it, somehow demystifies the process. Just my observation anyway.
Sounds right, widgetx3! We had one mom in our cub scout group who felt her son would damage more and learn less with pocket knives, bows, campfires and BB guns, so on all the campouts when other scouts learned to use these things safely, he was kept out. To this day, he probably doesn’t know the rules regarding potentially dangerous things, which makes him dangerous himself.
Absolutely Greg. My boys (and daughter) grew up with practical (and impractical) life experiences that taught them they can do anything they set their minds to. And that some of those things they set their minds to can be dangerous and should be undertaken with preparation and caution, and if at all possible a helmet and goggles….lol
You need to make wooden CO2 cars. I didn’t mind rockets getting blown up, but watching a car I spent over a month designing, cutting, chiseling, sanding, and painting get smashed to splinters in a matter of seconds made me sad like Eddie.
Boots is right. After all that hard work of building, gluing, painting. And let’s not forget naming the precious and now wonderous work of art. Its sad to see it die in seconds. \And speaking of naming conventions – what was the rocket’s name?

I think Eddie is way too young to be playing with model rockets. Toby may be too young, also, at least emotionally!
