Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for April 20, 1990
Transcript:
Calvin: I signed up to play baseball every recess, and I don't even like baseball that much. I mean, it's fun playing baseball with just you, because we both get to pitch, bat, run and catch all at once. We get to do everything. Hobbes: Mostly we just argue over the rules we make up! That's the part I like! Calvin: But this will be with teams and assigned positions and an umpire! It's boring playing it the real way! Hobbes: Do you even know how to play the real way? Calvin: See, that's another problem! Suppose they make me a halfback. Can I tackle the shortstop or not?

Watterson is slowly introducing the concepts behind the creation of Calvinball. Excellent, excellent pacing.

It’s not like Calvinball even exists yet. It definitely evolves over the course of time.

I think this is one reason pick-up games were generally more exciting than organized little league games—and they don’t even mention interfering adults.

When in doubt, tackle the shortstop.
