Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for May 03, 1990
Transcript:
Young boy 1: Hey stupid, if you're going to get our guys out, why don't you join the other team?! Young boy 2: What were you doing in the outfield? Don't you even know how to play?! Calvin: C'mon guys, it's just a game! This is supposed to be fun! Young boy 2: Games are only fun when you win, bonehead! You're gonna make us lose! Young boy 1: If you screw up again, you're dead meat, Calvin! Young boy 2: Wait till I tell the other teams about this! Young boy 3: Who taught you how to play anyway? Your grandmother? Calvin: Mr. Lockjaw, I don't want to play any more. There's too much team spirit. Mr. Lockjaw: Ok, quitter! Goodbye.

I knew kids were cruel, but come on Mr.Lockjaw! How can you be mean to a guy with a face like Calvin’s?

In today’s society, Mr. Lockjaw would catch hell from a parent for calling a kid a quitter.

Kids who think games are only fun when you win. Win or lose, you should have fun. Calvin should tell his mom or the principal about Lockjaw. I think he would’ve been fired or demoted, or something. Bad call for a teacher.

Way to coach a player who just caught a high ball the first chance he gets.

Smells like team spirit.

Plenty of blame to go around:1. Mr. Lockjaw didn’t explain a thing to Calvin, just sent him off to fill a position.2. Calvin’s teammates ignored him, even when it was time to come in to bat.3. Calvin was daydreaming—so even if he had been called, would he have noticed?4. Calvin’s teammates blamed him for doing something not many six-year-olds would have managed. They are hung up on the rules, even threatened violence, and certainly ostracized him. No wonder he wants to quit.5. Mr. Lockjaw accepts his resignation, calls him a quitter, and does nothing more—just as he had when Calvin showed up.

If this happened today, Calvin would administer swift justice against his abusive peers and coach.

If I was there, I would snap at them saying “the only reason why I joined this stupid team is because I didn’t want to be called a wimp! give me at least some credit!!”. yeah, I would be suuuuuuuuuuuper mad.

It was kids like these, and a teacher like that, that saw me very quickly lose all interest in team sport. A bit later than 2nd grade, I think it was around 5th grade.
I still persisted, but still got bullied out, but eventually I simply gave up trying, and was then bullied for my non-participation by the same kind of people who’d bullied me when I tried to participate.
You can’t win, all you can do is turn your back on these people and leave them behind you.

Mr Lockjaw and all the abusive kids can shove their bats where the sun don’t shine. Hopefully at least Calvin gets consolation from his Dad when he recounts this incident.
