Mom: Goodness, you look tired. Calvin: The monsters under my bed kept me up all night. Mom: But I checked for monsters when I tucked you in...and there weren't any. Calvin: I know. Mom: Then how did they get there after I left? Calvin: You want me to crawl under and ask them?!

There’s a portal under the bed that they hide under until the lights go off and the parents aren’t around

I’m surprised at Calvin’s response in the third panel. He’s perfectly capable of communicating with the monsters while he’s in bed. Also, since he sometimes fantasizes about shrinking to insect size, and he once had a fantasy about outgrowing the planet, I’m surprised he didn’t say something like, “Monsters are very mysterious. These particular ones must have had the power to shrink to microscopic size when you checked for them, and then grow back to full size after you left”.
