@bdaverin – Generally speaking, men have competed against each other for years without resorting to the level of vitriol and cruelty that women seem to resort to with ease.
The majority of reality shows just show the basest of human behavior. It also shows the majority of people who watch these shows aren’t any better. The main trouble is too many tv channels and not enough imagination to come up with a show that would be more interesting than real life.
Night-Gaunt: The conflict doesn’t have to be within the group, but can be together against a common problem. The better examples of the oft maligned role-playing games illustrate that.
The people I’ve met who work on television make a great deal of money. For that kind of money, I would be more than willing to give the American public what it clamors for despite losing all my self respect.

Oh, you can get guys competing against each other really easily. Just watch The Apprentice. Put money and reputation on the line and they get brutal.
