Transcript:
Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling Harry Potter and the Deathly Deficit Harry: What is this place? Dumbledore: Young Harry, you have been chosen to learn the ways of being a...fiscal conservative! Harry: So I'm destined to become a Republican leader?! That explains so much! I'm white, suburban, and I live in a closet! Dumbledore: For your first lesson, you will learn that when taxes are lowered, government revenues rise! Harry: Impossible! Dumbledore: No, it's MAGIC! You must believe! Harry: But it defies logic, theory, and all historical evidence! Dumbledore: Perhaps, to muggles! But we must save them from themselves! BEHOLD! Dumbledore: TRICKULUS LAPSUS! I give money to the rich, and jobs magically appear! POVERTIA ABORTIUM! I cut funding to Planned Parenthood, and the deficit disappears! Dumbledore: Now, learn well. A deadly showdown approaches. Harry: Hmm...is there a spell for making your opponents think they're compromising when they're really giving up? Coming Soon: "Harry Potter and the Economist's Stoned"

“Defies historical evidence?” What’s funny, snarky or clever about an unimaginative bald face lie used to convince people to surrender all economic power to the state?

The second panel made me laugh harder than the actual punchline.

“making sure the government can pay to provide the services we ask it to” – There is the problem. Most of us never ask the government for anything. That is why we do not want to pay for it. Not funny.

“There is the problem. Most of us never ask the government for anything. That is why we do not want to pay for it. Not funny.” That’s awesome. I woke up this morning and drove on the Interstate, an Interstate paid for by taxes. Police were busy at work today as well, paid for by taxes—ooh, fire department personnel too. Let’s see, without Social Security millions of Americans would have lost what little they had in the recent market collapse—oh, that stupid government! Yep, we should just hand over our collective power to a vested, powerful few, because Ayn Rand’s beaver makes Libertarians all wet. Private sector is comprised of people, and our government is comprised of people—hmm, can one group really be the savior while the other is the villain, or is reality a bit more nuanced? I wonder…

You may not want or need services now, but when you do and they are not there….. What? Make lemonade?

Obama. The Detroit Lions of Presidents. End of story.

I didn’t ask the government to try to rule the world, or to bail out rich bankers and brokers. That’s where a lot of the money has gone.

LOL! That’s the logical and rhetorical equivalent of saying you never asked to be born. Grow up, man. Unless you are living under a rock in the wilderness somewhere and subsisting on forage, you rely on the government plenty (cf. icky mung-mung). Actually, I take that back – without government protections there would be no wilderness for the likes of you to forage in. Don’t want to depend on government services? Move to Somalia where there are none. You’ll be doing everyone a favor.

When congress votes to cut their pay and entitlements – then i’ll know they are serious about the debt problem. Until then, it’s only a play for power.

An excellent strip: Increase revenue by increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans, especially on their bonuses. Spend on education & infra-structure to put Americans to work. Offer incentives to businesses that hire at a faster rate.

If Obama is the Detroit Lions of presidents, then W must have been the Raiders. The team that commits the most infractions year after year. The difference is that the Raiders actually pay penalties.

Has anyone ever successfully convinced a member of “the other side” that they were wrong? Why do people keep trying? It’s always a matter of what ones priorities are (i.e. freedom vs. safety), and priorities are typically based on life experience.
