    The patterns of light that these insects trace through the air with their lights are mating cues. Males home in on females of their species because they fly and blink in specific sequences. Clever predators learn to imitate those patterns and give horny boy bugs a big surprise.

    And when they hit your windshield they still glow for several minutes. They just stop flashing.

    Nabuquduriuzhur: Toxic to lizards? Our Mediterranean geckos eat them with no apparent ill effects. They keep blinking inside the gecko for a couple of minutes after ingestion.
