Wally: Dogs are smarter than cats! The average dog recognizes 165 words. The average cat only recognizes about 35!
Oogie: Actually, cats recognize way more words than that. We just don't care!
And what’s more, when they bring in a stuffed toy that the dog has never seen before, called by a name that the dog has never heard before, and ask the dog to go get that toy, after a lot of searching around, the dog finally brings out the correct toy! The dog actually figured out that since he didn’t know the name of THAT toy, and had never seen THAT toy before, that MUST be the one they were asking for!!
I walk my new puppy at the hospital during shift change. The only words he knows are “cute” and “adorable”. I guess no, stay, and come are more advanced concepts.
For you pet lovers, there was a great article in Nat Geo about recent discoveries regarding the genetic modifications that are triggered by domestication (be sure to look at the “picture gallery” also). Article here.

Actually, my dog will chase anything that moves. A previous dog not only chased a mouse, but caught it.
