I am not much of a sports fan but I have wondered if any of those guys playing single and double-A ball ever make it up to the majors or do they just play for peanuts for years because they love the game (or maybe are not good at anything else?).
yep, sammysock! the book is “the 33-year-old rookie”, and it’s the story of chris coste. he’d toiled in the minors for 11 years when he made the phillies’ in 2006 as their back-up catcher. sadly, age caught up to him as it does with all players, and he was out of baseball in 2009.

There is a AAA team in my city (Norfolk, VA). Saw Daryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden back in the days before they made the majors.
