I try to use a real cashier.

My experience that the real cashier is much faster, simply because there are always people who don’t know how to use a self-checkout and take forever.

Is it working?

I always try to find an attractive cashier. I refuse to use the self checkout unless I get a discount for using it.

I’ll use the self check if there is no line there, and everything I’m buying is regular scan coded. Nothing on hangers, either.
