Frazz by Jef Mallett for September 21, 2011
Transcript:
Frazz: Brought your own lunch? Girl: I heard today is the international day of peas. I hate peas. Frazz: Not peas. Peace. Girl: Oh. Oops. Frazz: I'm sure the cafeteria will make it worth brown-bagging it somehow. Girl: I wonder how many other people have screwed up peace because they were busy hating something they didn't understand.

Gilda Radner’s Emily Litella comes immediately to mind.“Oh, that’s very different, then. Never mind.” Although, the only peace she disturbed was Chevy Chase’s, if any.

I lived in Jerusalem for a few years, and everybody hated everybody there. And not just the obvious Jews vs. Muslims vs. Christians. The ultra orthodox Jews and the secular Jews didn’t get along and occasionally threw rocks at each other; Muslims wanting peace clashed with Muslims definitely not wanting peace. And for centuries a Muslim family has held the keys to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (traditional site of the crucifixion and resurrection) because the various Christian groups that control different areas within the church practice a vigorous historical distain for each other.
Jerusalem is the world in microcosm.

Why call it the Holy Land anymore. It is the most unholy place in the world. The true Holy Land is the UP of Michigan!

Last panel is wonderful. If this is the only comic I like this week, it’s still made my morning trip to Go Comics worthwhile.

and the readership of this strip is not a microcosm. As an agnostic observer, I must note that most of the hatred and violence in the modern world seems to originate predominantly within one religious persuasion.

Any group convinced that they hold a monopoly on The Truth isn’t going to take kindly to another group that believes the same…

I am reminded of the Kingston Trio’s “Merry Minuet”.
Alternatively, My coworkers don’t like my vocabulary because I make full use of the English language. I hold that they are “Anti-Semantic” . and therefore they create a hostile work environment.

You all should pick up a copy of Hector Avalos’ “Fighting Words: The Origins of Religious Violence.” Definitely a worthwhile read.
