Please, please, please, let’s use the proper terminology. Algebra uses numbers and variables. Math is a beautiful language, and I wish I could paddle my students when they mangle the grammar. It’s no wonder they have trouble understanding it.…then again, it’s probably the past teachers who deserve the beating for being lax, allowing small misconceptions to pile up, and handing them off for someone else to deal with.

I think the numbers were the easy part of Algebra; the variables (letters and symbols) were the difficult part.
