Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for September 26, 2011
Transcript:
Rick: Off to do the Perry story. Joanie: Drive safely. What day are you back? Rick: Probably Sunday. Joanie: Sunday? But I'm going to Boston Friday to meet with the Warren Campaign. Rick: Great - what's the problem? Joanie: The only one in the house will be Jeff. Zipper: Can't make your party, man - I got rugby club. Jeff: Just bring them, too!

Is Jeff almost 30 or almost 13?

I’m baffled. Where is Trudeau taking this “dim bulb”? And why? Jeff is an imaginative writer, and “creative sorts” deserve some everyday-life latitude, but this is ridiculous.

The party to celebrate his book? Maybe GBT means to continue that arc and to bring Jeff’s whimsies into compeition with the political campaigns. Then we’ll be able to tell whether the Republican debates are as substantial as the exploits of Sorkh Razil.

We are all suffering from Jeff overload. Hopefully, GT will make the story arc entertaining.

I didn’t know there were rugby clubs in the US. Supposedly rugby is a hooligans’ game played by gentlemen whereas football (soccer) is a gentlemens’ game played by hooligans.
But it still sounds like bad news for the house…

Jeff represents the Democrats. Aimless, drifting, always in need of a handout and lost in a dreamworld.

“All Trudeau’s characters represent the democrats.”Precisely. And by responding to GBT’s cartoon characters, Republicans expose their limited capacity for political thought. What Republicans on this blog try to pass off as political comment amounts to little more than calling Doonesbury a caricature of public figures and events. DUH!
cdhaley about 13 years ago
And I’m saying, Nicky, that Republican commenters fail to keep that in mind. They miss GBT’s wit because they mistake representation (cartoons ) for presentation.

rpmurray’s description — “Aimless, drifting, always in need of a handout and lost in a dreamworld” — would befit Jesus. The New Testament depicts the conservatives of the time as “scribes and pharisees”. Today’s fundamentalists could be well described by Bible writers (INCLUDING those of the Old Testament, such as Amos, Jeremiah and Isaiah) as today’s Republicans, Teapartiers, Birchers, Reichwingers, and their ilk.

DylanThomas3.14159 Actually, Jesus’ thinking was more in line with the Pharisees than their opponents, the Saducees who were conservatives. The Pharisees were very ethical people; Jesus just criticized those who were ethical in a politically-correct kind of way.

Luke 11:20 KJV, Jesus speaking: “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God IS COME [present tense] upon you.” .For Jesus the “kingdom of God” or “kingdom of heaven” was a present, contemporary reality, not a future one.

Luke 17:20-21: “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation; Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you [Greek PLURAL ‘you’, not singular].”.Again, for Jesus the “kingdom of God” was a present, contemporary reality, not a future one. A better Greek-English translation would be: “… the kingdom of God is AMONG you”. Don’t look for it “here”! Don’t look for it “there”! It has already arrived! If Jesus is divine, then where Jesus stands His kingdom stands also. And Jesus was standing in the midst of a group of scoffing Pharisees. Therefore, the kingdom of God (or, equivalently, heaven) was all around them, surrounding Jesus like a giant halo. They were just too blind to see it. Are we?

“My kingdom is not of this world [political culture of ANY kind, including democracies].” —Jesus

@Palin drome Cricifixion was NOT a Jewish method of capital punishment. The Jews had no control of what was written over Jesus’ cross. Since the Romans accused him of insurrection it was THEY who inscribed INRI over his cross. Had Jews determined his execution, he would have been stoned, not crucified.
DylanThomas3.14159 about 13 years ago
Living in the “kingdom of heaven” today means striving toward perfection while remaining “simul justus et peccator” (Luther’s Latin for “simultaneously justified and sinful”)..It is both apolitical and practical (not otherworldly or utopian). It means loving and respecting your fellow human being the world around (whether he is communist or black or homosexual or atheist or Muslim or even — gasp! — Republican).

The only problem with Warren’s campaign is that it’s not for the Presidency.

Your stale concept of “the liberal mind” is an empty stereotype that you and a few others on this blog like to bandy about. Such a witless stereotype merely shuts out intelligent discussion. At least some wit goes into creating a caricature. Your stereotyping spares you the work of thoughtful political analysis
