The United States Smithsonian Institution has more than 137 million specimens, exhibits and works of art in its 19 museums, 9 research facilities and it's zoo! How is it that Alaska can be the northernmost, westernmost and easternmost state in the United States of America? Answer tomorrow- loose goose! In 2002, 13-year-old Shawn Hacking of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, was knocked from his skateboard by a flying goose!

Parts of Alaska cross the international date line. So if you live in Alaska you may already be reading this yesterday.

If only the goose had honked …

No part of Alaska (or Russia) crosses the International Dateline. Part of Alaska crosses the 180 degree longitude, thus putting part of it in the eastern hemisphere. The International Dateline zigs and zags to avoid running through a country or island group.

Perhaps the skateboarder was on a wild goose chase, and the goose didn’t appreciate it!

Easternmost point — Sail Rock, just offshore of West Quoddy Head, Maine (66°57’W)[or Aleutian Islands, Alaska](179°40’E)

The easternmost point in the lower 48 is called West Quoddy Head, Maine. If that sounds counterintuitive, it’s because East Quoddy Head is on the other side of Quoddy Narrows, a strait between Canada and the United States.

I went to the Smithsonian last year! Just one, you need more than a week to visit all of them.

I read that the Smithsonian contains Archie Bunker’s favorite chair, Fonzi’s jacket, as well as so many memorable items. Didn’t it once contain Christopher Robin’s (A.A. Milene’s son’s) stuffed animals of the original Winnie the Pooh bear, Tigger, Rabbit, etc? Then Minlene’s relatives in England bought them all back and returned to England.
