Smaug was male. Galadriel was part of the White Council which included Saruman and Elrond. They moved against Sauron in Dol Guldor even though Saruman held them back.

Well, female Dwarves have beards as well and pretty much look like male Dwarves. If I remember correctly it is even stated somewhere that if they do travel (though that happens rarely) they even dress and behave like male Dwarves, so technically there could have been a female Dwarf amongst the group in The Hobbit.Though I somehow doubt that a beard is exactly what Heart has in mind.
