One of the classy elements of Daddy’s Home – okay, the only classy element – is the drawings inserting Pete into various historical artwork. Today’s take on Sebastiano del Piombo’s portrait of CC is pretty good (and yes, I had to look it up). My favorite is Pete as Che.
Good comic. Funny. But as a Native American, I’m not celebrating an Italian idiot who had to get money from Spain to go on a cruise to find whatever he was looking for. On the way he got seriously lost and then condemned the inhabitants of where he landed to being called a ridiculous name, based on his idiocy. I’m sorry but St Brendan of Ireland “discovered” America first, then a Viking guy. Oh, and my people discovered it before then because we were LIVING here!!
What every intelligent person knows is that Columbus’ problem was not convincing people that the world was not flat (it’s spherical shape was not questioned in his time; that was a deliberate lie concocted by Washington Irving in his biography of Columbus – Irving should have stuck to fiction) – it was the world’s size. Columbus’ error was in underestimating the distance from the Canary Islands to Japan. He thought it was only 2,300 miles; the actual distance is 12,200 miles. Here is a link to a map that shows what Columbus thought the Atlantic Ocean looked like: http://tinyurl.com/65tg9ly.He’s lucky the Americas were here; had they not been, he and his crew would have run out of supplies and starved. On the other hand, the native Americans would have been lots better off…
How big of a landmass are we talking about?Really big? N.Z.Or Franz Josef Land, a group of more than 100 islands?Or Hawaii, that gets a little bigger every day?
Even tho’ I am entirely of Celtic origens, I LIKE Columbus day (and rather resent that it is not even a “garbage” Holiday, while MLK and Chavez ARE). They were never heros to most of us, just PITA activists; I dislike all activists and refuse to join AARP even tho’ I’m now 74 or NOW even though I am a woman.

Meanwhile I’m thinking how sexist and dated this is. Kind of surprising for this strip.
