Of course, if they’d been cleverly talking about how they themselves are actually comic characters, or if they were mugging it up with the readers, we’d call it ‘breaking the fourth wall’ or somesuch thing.

Meta-comics is the proper term. Like Sam’s strip by Mort Walker.

This cartoon came from all the press that the new Superman movie and comics were getting when they announced that Superman would no longer wear his red undies. Everyone seemed to make the same loopy comments about Superman wearing his underwear on the outside, Ha, ha, blah, blah. No one seemed to want to mention that he was STILL running around in Big Red Boots and a Big Red Cape… and, get this: A Blue Body Stocking. Doesn’t that strike anybody as a really, really odd choice of clothing?

Before anyone has a chance to take me to task for not knowing: Yeah, the original Superman costume was modeled on a Circus or carnival acrobat’s attire- the sort of thing that athletes wore when performing in public. I get it. But it was nostalgia that kept the guy wearing that get-up, and kept the writers trying to explain it. He should’a switched to Nike Dri-Fit gear a long time ago.

Actually, skin tight clothing makes practical sense for a super hero, since they are action heroes after all and don’t need to wear garments that get in the way when they are tussling with the bad guys, but why do so many of them wear capes? They are for style only and are completely impractical! How come we never see Superman or Batman getting their capes caught in tree branches, doors, having people step on them, etc.? You know that’s bound to happen pretty often.
