It is certainly a rare appearance of an adult- but not the first time. Charliue Brown and Lucy were once shown against a whole crowd of realistically drawn adults. Schulz didn’t show the faces, though. They were either shown as a silhouette in the distance, or with their heads beyond the panel. This was never reprinted until a few years ago in the Fanatagraphics collections. One that did appear in the original paperbacks showed an adult hand, also quite realistic, leaning on a counter. Here, Schulz gets around the issue by having the character represented as Linus’ drawing- but it’s still a surprise!
Charles Schulz drawing 5-6 year old style, a throwback to the late Bil Keane (who passed away this week at age 89) when he drew 7 year old Billy style art in the Family Circus comic strip.
Whenever I got uptight, a friend of mine would advise me to reach up and rotate each ear one turn counterclockwise. I never asked why, and besides, it worked, but now I wonder if this is where he got the idea.
Closest I’ve ever seen to an adult in “Peanuts.” Here’s the Lucy Golf Tournament link, with adult legs/silhouettes: http://peanuts.wikia.com/wiki/Adults
Linus has the potential to be a good writer one day. There’s always someone, like Snoopy, who will come along andcritique it for him. Just keep those ears turning, Linus.

It may have worked for Frankenstein’s monster if you gave that screw a turn.

Maybe he should try that with Lucy. It might explain her crabbiness.

This is really off beat for Peanuts. Makes me wonder what inspired Schulz to draw it.

Hint to Linus: start with It was a dark and stormy night. You can tell the same story, but it has to have a chiller opening.

Gee, this was done in 1964, I was not reading Peanuts then. Maybe Schultz was having an offbeat moment.

The illustrations are good Linus, but the story lacks substance!
Love the banner with Snoopy and his ears in the air reading his book!

One of my very favorite Peanuts strips ever. I do wish I had Linus around when I have a headache.

Nice addition of the adult. First time I saw a drawing within a cartoon on peanuts. :(|)

Shouldn’t the cartoon adult Doc be going
“Wah—wah…wah.wah,wah " and sounding
like a muted trombone when he talks?
